The Making of Sterling Silver Gemstone Jewelry in India

Sterling silver gemstone jewellery made in India is handmade, beautiful, stylish, and full of tradition. Each piece is made with care by skilled artisans who turn silver & gemstones into something special. From designing to polishing, every process is intricate, which brings out a fine jewellery piece.

Let’s understand how this jewellery is made in a simple way.

1.   Design

The process starts with an idea. Designers draw the jewellery on paper or create it on a computer. They decide the shape, size, and style of the piece keeping in mind the age group for which the jewellery piece is being designed.

They also plan:

  • Gemstone and its placement as per design
  • Which design pattern will be used
  • How the final jewellery will look

A good design is the first step to making beautiful jewellery.

2.   Casting or Handmade

As pure silver is very soft an alloy normally copper is mixed upto 7.5% with pure silver to make 92.5% silver which is international standards to make jewellery.

Next, sterling silver (925 silver) is melted at a high temperature in furnance.

The melted silver is poured into a mold to create the basic shape or small pieces are beaten by hammer and other tools to make desired shape by hand.

After cooling, the silver becomes hard and takes the shape of the design. This forms the base of the jewellery.

  • gold-plated silver jewellery

3.   Gemstone Selection Now comes the selection of gemstones.

Precious stones like Ruby, Emerald, Sapphires, Corals etc or Semi-precious Stones like amethyst, topaz, garnet, and turquoise are used as per the design.

The gemstones are chosen based on:

  • Color
  • Shine
  • Shape
  • Quality

A good gemstone makes the jewellery look more attractive.

4.   Stone Setting

This is a careful and skilled step. The gemstone is fixed into the silver frame. Jewellers use different methods like bezel setting or Prongs setting etc to set the stone as per the requirement of design so that:

  • It stays secure
  • It looks bright and visible

This step needs great attention because even a small mistake can damage the stone.

5.   Polishing & Finishing

In the final step, the jewellery is filling properly to remove any sharp edges and then polished using a buffing machine to make it shiny and smooth. This includes:

  • Cleaning the piece
  • Removing rough edges
  • Giving it a final shine

After this, the jewellery is ready to wear.

6.   Gold Plating

Silver can be plated with gold or rose gold to give it a look of real gold.

VERMEIL:

Vermeil is high-quality jewelry consisting of a sterling silver base coated with a       thick layer of gold. To be considered true vermeil, the plating must be at least 10K gold, at least 2.5 microns thick, and use .925 sterling silver, making it more durable and hypoallergenic than standard gold plating
